It turns out the saying “a dog is a man’s best friend” isn’t always true, particularly if the man happens to be a criminal.
Riviera Beach police approached 26-year-old Avery Davis as he was walking with his pit bull along West 29th street in Palm Beach, Florida. Davis, who matched the description of a burglary suspect, was carrying a bundle of hair care products. According to the police report, officers ordered Davis to lay on the ground. At first Davis seemed to comply and began to kneel. He hugged his dog, announced “Y’all gonna have to kill us,” then jumped up and started running away.
One of the officers shot Davis with a taser gun and knocked him to the ground. As the suspect attempted to flee a second time, he removed the dog’s leash and yelled “Kill ’em boy, kill ’em,” while pointing a finger at the officers.
According to the New York Daily News, the dog looked confused and then started attacking Davis. The law-abiding pooch bit his buttocks and attempted to bite his head before Davis escaped. Officers found him hiding under a SUV in a nearby apartment complex parking lot.
Davis was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach and treated for his injuries. He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a law-enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.
