Members of the The Auburn Greens homeowners association in Auburn, California were shocked by a new mandate demanding them to leave their garage doors open.
Residents recently received a letter informing them that garage doors must remain open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Non-compliance would be met with a $200 fine.
The strange demand came after one tenant was caught using their garage to provide housing for another family.
“That’s an issue that they should address differently, I feel,” said homeowner Fred Waidtlow to local NBC affiliate KCRA 3 News. “If we have to have this open from 8 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon, anybody can help themselves and steal you blind. And they do it in this Auburn Greens complex,” he said after cleaning out his garage and moving all of his belongings inside his home.
“This will just be an open door policy and saying, ‘Welcome, take what you want,'”complained neighbor Shally Ia. She and other homeowners plan on keeping their doors closed.
A spokesman for the California Association of Homeowners Associations told KCRA that it’s completely legal for HOAs to make changes like this. California civil codes says that rule changes require a vote from the homeowners, but it’s not clear if that happened in this case.
