North Sentinel Island is a tiny island just to the west of India. The native inhabitants have lived there for thousands of years and are one of the only remaining tribes that hasn’t progressed past the Stone Age.
It doesn’t matter if you try to make contact directly or accidentally wash up on shore, the Sentinelese treat almost all visitors with the same greeting, death.
There was a single instance in 1991 when 28 Sentinelese voluntarily came forward and briefly met with a humanitarian. This is the only reported incident where a visitor was not attacked.
Most visitors return from the island injured, or they don’t return at all. In 2006 two fishermen were brutally murdered after venturing too close to the island.
Sure, we have plenty of modern weapons to wipe this tribe off the face of the Earth, but the Indian government has decided to simply ban all access to the island. India believes it is best to leave the Sentinelese alone and that nothing would be gained from forcing them into modern society. The result is essentially a time capsule of ancient humanity.
