There’s almost nothing more Russian than vodka and the AK-47. Starting in 2016 the infamous rifle could be proudly stamped “MADE IN USA.” Kalashnikov USA released the following statement earlier this year,
Whether you are a sport shooter, hunter, protecting family, home and country, the new Kalashnikov USA firearms will exceed your expectations of how a firearm should perform.”
Mikhail Kalashnikov was a Russian Army tank commander in WWII. While laying in his hospital bed recovering from the wounds he received in the Battle of Bryansk, Kalashnikov had the idea for one of the greatest automatic weapons the world has ever known. Influenced by the US military’s M1 Garand and the Simonov carbine (which eventually became the equally famous SKS), he developed an early prototype for a new carbine that would fire a 7.62x39mm cartridge in 1944. By 1947 his dream culminated in the AK-47.
RWC, the company responsible for importing and distributing Kalashnikov firearms in the US, ended their contract with the Russian manufacturer in 2015. They retained rights to the name and were able to start a small manufacturing company in Tullytown, Pennsylvania. This year they will expand the volume of their production with a move to a larger facility near Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
