One of the Army’s most honorable duties is to guard the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The 3rd Infantry Regiment’s “The Old Guard” guard the tomb 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A lone soldier bearing no rank on his uniform makes his solemn walk along this hallowed ground.
The Changing of the Guard is an iconic ceremony that occurs every half hour in Summer or every hour in Winter. The ceremony requires a relief commander’s white glove inspection of the weapon before the active sentinel is relieved.
In the video below, the relief commander drops the weapon and accidentally stabs the relief sentinel in his foot. The sentinel shows incredible discipline and commitment to his duty after being stabbed.
The sentinel paces before the tomb without any sign of complaint or injury other than the crimson blood oozing from his left boot.
