In 2009 Corporal of Horse Craig Harrison, UK Cavalry, made the longest sniper shot in military history over a distance of 1.54 miles. Members of his unit were ambushed by a group of Taliban insurgets. Cpl. Harrison and his spotter observed the ambush from a ridge as it happened. His 8.59mm rounds traveled for nearly 4 seconds before hitting their targets, which were more than 1,000 yards beyond the recommended range of the L115A3 sniper rifle.
