Honestly, would you expect anything less than absolute excellence from the Marines?
Moving and shooting through a fast paced obstacle course is right up their alley, so there’s no surprise that the United States Marine Corps. Combat Shooting Team were well prepared to join in the 3 Gun Wold Championship
Founded in 2005 and now coached by Staff Sgt. Martin Lucero, the team was created as an experimental unit comprised of infantry Marines whose goal was the “validation of marksmanship tactics and doctrine.”
“No two stages will ever be the same,” says Lucero. “You might start with a rifle in your hand, and pistol loaded and holstered, and the shotgun placed somewhere on the range.”
Over the last 12 years the team has grown to include Marines across a wide range of specialties. Lucero says he holds his team to a higher standard than his civilian counterparts. When they put on their competition jerseys they are representing something more than just themselves or their teammates. “First thing on your mind obviously is safety. You don’t want to do anything to get anyone hurt, but for me, being a shooter for the United States Marine Corps, I’m in the spotlight. I’m representing the Marine Corps, so I’m not going to go out there and act like a fool. If I start missing targets I’m not going to come off the stage and pout like a lot of these civilians do and leave the stage all butt-hurt, cursing and screaming,” said Lucero.
