Traditionally, a runner who wins the gold medal at a global championship will run a “lap of honor” while holding the flag of their country. Laura Muir had dreamed of this moment since she was a little girl. She had just won the gold medal for the 1500m race at Europe’s Indoor Athletics Championship, but as she reached for a Scottish flag she was stopped by a race official. There would be no victory lap today.
The race official told her that they were running late and didn’t have time for her traditional celebration. Muir was crushed, as were the crowd and race commentators. Even those spectators from rival countries felt this was a low blow. It wasn’t the runners fault that things were running behind, and a victory lap isn’t terribly time consuming.
Muir tries to start her lap, but the bean-counting official continues to block her path. Finally Muir has had enough and breaks free from the official. The fans absolutely love it and rush to the track to bring her a flag. They can’t get her a Scottish flag quickly enough, so Muir decides to represent the entire United Kingdom in her victory lap.
