A bridge in Durham, North Carolina has been dubbed “the can opener” after dozens of trucks are scalped while trying to drive under it each year.
The bridge was built over 100 years ago, and at 11′ 8″ it’s well below the average North Carolina bridge height of 15′. There are countless low bridges like this across the country, but “the can opener” received particular fame after a local business owner set up a camera.
Jürgen Henn can barely go a week without hearing the fateful sound of a truck losing its top just outside his office window. Trying to make the best of things, Henn set up a camera and started posting videos online. His videos became so popular, Henn and his wife set up the website 11foot8.com to keep them all in one spot.
Henn even collects pieces of scrap left after the accident clean up and posts the images as “Crash Art” on his website.
In one of his most recent videos, a driver peels the top off a rented Penske. Either unwilling or unable to do anything about it, the driver simply flees the scene and lets police solve the problem for him.
Take a look at the full video below. What would you have done if you saw an empty truck stuck like this?
