There’s been an astounding increase in the number of Americans who believe guns make them safer

The latest polling data shows that two times as many Americans believe that guns make them safer as did a decade ago.

Gallup reports that in 2000, 30 percent of Americans believed guns in the home make them safer. That number is now at 60 percent.

Predictably TIME notes, “Republicans were twice as likely as Democrats to say guns made them safer” and “[n]early 70% of people in the South say that guns make their homes safer, compared with just under 60% in the West and East.”

Interestingly, there are more people who believe in having guns for safety than there are people who actually have guns for safety.
