The Toyota Prius has been the butt of tree-hugger jokes since it was first designed back in 1997.
The hybrid gas-electric “hipster’s choice” compact gets great mileage, but it’s not known for much style or power.
Fortunately the guys at American Racing Headers decided to breath new life into an old 2005 Prius by cramming a 1,000 HP Hellcat under the hood.
They first announced their concept on Facebook back in June with a photo of the muscle engine under the Prius’ stock hood. They added an enormous 4.5 liter Whipple supercharger to bring the Hellcat engine up to its full potential. A roll cage is also visible in the photo above as the Prius is prepped for its drag strip debut.
Somehow they were able to pack aTremec Magnum 6-speed transmission and a custom Ford 9″ rear axle and carbon fiber driveshaft under the stock body work.
ARH decided the plain-Jane stock paint wasn’t worthy of the monster they built. A combination of OD Green, Old Glory, and a screaming eagle were added to really drive home the ‘Murican values that inspired this upgrade.
While it was custom built for the strip, this Franken-Prius is still 100% street legal according to Car & Driver.
