An unidentified teenager was hospitalized with a fractured skull after jumping into an open aquarium at a Bass Pro Shops in Denver, Colorado. The teen faces criminal charges after he jumped off a 30 foot ledge into the giant fish tank. The boy was participating in a viral challenge which encourages people to try and swim in the popular fish tank without getting caught.
Bass Pro Shops around the country are known for their signature fish tanks that allow customers to view native fish of various shapes and sizes. A dangerous new trend has emerged where some thrill seeking customers record themselves attempting to dive into the fish tank, swim, and then escape. Dozens of these videos have been popping up on various social media platforms over the past few weeks.
According to Fox 31 in Denver, a spokesperson for Bass Pro Shops said that the company plans of pressing criminal charges and prosecuting the teen to the full extent of the law.
The company hired an animal care team to see what, if any, damage was done by the intrusive team. According to a press release, Bass Pro announced that all of their aquatic animals seem to be doing well. The company released the following statement after the incident last weekend,
“Yesterday a teenage minor attempted to enter our aquarium as part of an intended prank. Our associates and security team quickly addressed the issue safely and without incident. We also appreciate the assistance of local law enforcement. Such occurrences are extremely rare and highly discouraged. We host more than 120 million visitors every year and provide a safe, fun experience for families who share our respect for wildlife.”
A representative from the Denver Police department told local CBS Denver 4 that the teen would be required to meet with detectives after recovering from his injuries.
