A good Samaritan with a gun saved an Albuquerque woman and her daughter from an abusive husband prepared to commit murder.
According to local NBC affiliate KOB 4 News, the unidentified woman and her daughter were on their way to Sunport on Sunday night when her estranged husband crashed his vehicle into their car.
The enraged husband drew a firearm and began shooting at his family, striking the daughter in the arm. The man then pulled the injured girl from the car and began beating her in the street.
During the assault, a 12-year National Guard veteran pulled over to help. The unnamed veteran told police that the man pointed a gun at him. The good Samaritan drew his own weapon and fired multiple shots, killing the deranged husband.
APD Spokesperson Simon Drobik says the mother was terrified and fears her husband may have murdered her daughter had the veteran not intervened. “She said, ‘He saved our lives,'” Drobik said to KOB 4 on Monday. “I mean, that’s how much she was in fear of getting killed by this guy.”
The veteran was taken into police custody, but immediately released following a standard interview. He faces no charges.
